Watching the video about the teen brain (and the relatively undeveloped executive functioning in teens) made me think about teens’ capacity for risk-taking in creative work as well as more self-destructive forms of risk-taking. In general, it seems like many adults today are more risk-averse than we need to be, and that this can hinder innovation. I’m curious about how we can create educational structures that maintain high levels of artistic, intellectual, and emotional risk-taking beyond adolescence while building executive functioning skills that allow people to stay alive long enough to reap the benefits of these risks.

You make an interesting point here. Perhaps if adolescents were free to be more risky in their artistic expression they would have lesser need for expression in the form of behavioral risks. You got me thinking.

Very interesting points here Sarah. I can see this carrying over to the workplace as well. It seems pretty common that in an office environment people are afraid to take risks for fear of doing something wrong or looking bad. And sometimes this risk averse behavior or lack of creativity may come about because there just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to think outside the box. Since I work in Executive Education I have a bit of a biased opinion here, but I think companies that allow their employees to seek outside training that pushes them beyond their comfort levels really can reap the benefits of creative thinking and innovation. For many it is a matter of getting a bit of a nudge in a new direction to regain some of that beneficial risk taking behavior.
